This course is designed for English-majored students to achieve pre-intermediate level in listening and speaking (A2). The course provides students with vocabulary, grammar and background knowledge of familiar topics in everyday life. In addition, this course focuses on improving listening skills, i.e. listening for main ideas, listening for details of short talks and conversations as well as helps students build the ability to communicate confidently, describe problems and suggest proper solutions, present ideas and engage in conversations related to familiar topics such as hobbies, learning and work. Apart from listening and speaking skills, students are offered with opportunities to obtain necessary study skills, critical and creative thinking skills which are the cornerstone for their development in thinking and communicative competences in the future.

Overview

This course is designed for English majored students to achieve pre-intermediate level to low intermediate level (equivalent to A2+ to B1­-– CEFR) in writing. The course provides students with practice in writing good sentences and different types of paragraphs. With regard to good sentence writing, students are given ample practice in sentence structures, grammar issue, capitalization and punctuation which are related to sentence skills in order to help students avoid common sentence problems and build sentences in a logical and grammatically correct manner. With regard to paragraph writing, each unit enables students to fully understand the organization of a complete paragraph, which consists of a topic sentence, supporting sentences and a concluding sentence.

Overview

This course is designed for English majored students to achieve intermediate level (equivalent to B1 – CEFR) in reading. The meaning of new English vocabulary provided before main readings is inferred from examples or paragraphs; the students, thus, can develop their guessing the meaning of new words through various contexts. Distinct tasks of the vocabulary skills also help them acquire much more vocabulary after the reading process. In addition, with a variety of reading tasks, the students are taught skills of reading for gist and details and the skill of speed reading by using the “keyword’’ technique. Moreover, they learn to use charts and graphs for reading texts faster and more efficiently. Last but not least, the students can enhance their critical thinking, creativity, and inferences.
