Overview

This course is designed for English majored students to achieve intermediate level (equivalent to B1 – CEFR) in reading. The meaning of new English vocabulary provided before main readings is inferred from examples or paragraphs; the students, thus, can develop their guessing the meaning of new words through various contexts. Distinct tasks of the vocabulary skills also help them acquire much more vocabulary after the reading process. In addition, with a variety of reading tasks, the students are taught skills of reading for gist and details and the skill of speed reading by using the “keyword’’ technique. Moreover, they learn to use charts and graphs for reading texts faster and more efficiently. Last but not least, the students can enhance their critical thinking, creativity, and inferences.

  • Generalize their knowledge of natural sciences, social sciences and humanities learned from the content of each reading passage in the course
  • Explain the meaning of the vocabulary learned from the course
  • Distinguish various reading skills at the basic level (previewing, scanning, skimming, and identifying main ideas and details) and at the intermediate level (note – taking : mapping, creating text plan, summarizing, using collocations, and identifying tone)
  • Distinguish different task types and various reading skills applied to do the IELTS test at the intermediate level

  • Reproduce their knowledge of natural sciences, social sciences and humanities formerly learned to read other reading passages faster
  • Employ learned vocabulary skills to infer the meaning of the vocabulary in other contexts as well as utilize the learned vocabulary in the new contexts
  • Apply reading skills at the intermediate level to comprehend various reading texts
  • Give personal opinions or make evaluations about issues raised in the reading texts
  • Be keen on the learning autonomy for reading to broaden vocabulary resources and to enhance reading skills and strategies to cope with readings in general and the IELTS test in particular.
