Overview

This course is desgined for first-year English-majored students of HCMC UTE in order to introduce a new foreign language as a second language.  This Chinese course starts at Unit 1 - Unit 10 of Standard Curriculum of HSK1 + Exercise book HSK1 published by Beijing Language and Culture University Press. The course provides students with the basis of consonant, vowel, phonetic structure, tone, tone change... in order to fully master phonetics in Chinese, basic Chinese character structure and the writing of Chinese characters. Furthermore, after the course, students can use Chinese to greet, bid farewell, apologise, show gratitude, trade, visit, discussion,... at a basic level of pre-HSK1 - respectively to the goal of the course.

Overview

Writing 1 is designed to help English majors progress toward pre-intermediate level (equivalent to B1 - CEFR). This course offers intensive practice of 3 types of basic sentences (simple, compound and complex) so that students can express their ideas effectively through making decisions about appropriate vocabulary and style. Besides, sentence level skills such as sentence formation, punctuation, and sentence combination will be emphasized to bolster their performance in future writing classes.

The course is designed for English major freshmen in order to achieve reading ability at the elementary level (B1). Specifically, the course helps students develop reading skills such as reading for main ideas, reading for detail information, distinguishing topic and key words, critical thinking skills, guessing meanings of words in context, and word analysis. In addition, to help students become familiar with the self-study and standardized PET exam format, this course provides important reading strategies and skills in preparation for this exam.
