Overview

This course is designed to provide English majors with basic knowledge of semantics in terms of word meaning and sentence meaning, with which students can develop their capacity for deep understanding and skills in linguistic meaning analysis. Also, students are expected to be able to apply the acquired knowledge and skills in the process of language learning and research as well as in daily communication. Moreover, students are equipped with a system of English semantic concepts, terminology and study skills helping them enhance their foreign language capacity.

Objectives

G1 Basic knowledge of English semantics including notions related to lexical meaning, referent and reference, word meaning, lexical relation, meaning transformations, sentence meaning and utterance meaning; The differences between Semantics and other linguistics subjects; A system of semantic terminology and concepts in English;
G2 Ability to apply the semantic knowledge and skills in the process of language learning and research as well as in daily communication and to discover various aspects of language;
G3 Effective communication and group work skills both inside and outside the professional environment.

  • Explain basic notions in English semantics;
  • Identify lexical meaning, lexical relation, meaning transformations, sentence meaning and utterance meaning; Explain the differences between Semantics and other linguistics subjects;
  • Master the use of English semantic concepts and terminology;

  • Apply the knowledge of semantics learned in the course to best and most effectively convey meaning in everyday conversations as well as in professional communication situations;
  • Analyze lexical meaning and sentence meaning in translation texts and interpretation situations;
  • Develop research skills in the field;
  • Develop critical thinking and desire to discover and study features of English semantics as well as various aspects of language in general;
  • Demonstrate ethical standards and principles as well as professional performance and continuous updating of information;
