This course is intended for HCMUTE English majored students at the upper-intermediate level to achieve low-advanced level (equivalent to B2 – CEFR) in pronunciation. It equips students with knowledge of varieties of English, the pronunciation of words and phrases including consonant clusters, stressed and unstressed syllables, and foreign words.

Module syntax equips students with theories in syntax in English language. The background knowledge includes: structure and cluster composition nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions - common phrases in English – from simple to complex level and draw tree diagrams representing component sand phrase structures and sentences. Syntax module also provides basic knowledge of English syntax such as different kinds of sentences in English, classification of sentences, described by the criteria according to different criteria and different grammar systems. In addition, the module also provides students with methods and sentence analysis and description of English grammar system. From this background knowledge, the learner develops his or her ability to identify, compare and interpret structures in English to Vietnamese, then develops his or her skills in translating English – Vietnamese more effectively.

Senior students who satisfy all the requirements aforementioned can undertake a graduation paper with an experienced supervisor assigned by the faculty. They have to adhere to every step of the procedure to do a thesis such as choosing the topic, tailoring the research proposal, adopting certain methods of collecting and analyzing data as well as presenting their research paper. After the course, students’ skills in independent research, information searching, analyzing and synthesizing, critical thinking are reinforced.

This module is to help second-year translation students understand the basics of translation types, translation techniques and mistakes to be avoided. By the end of the course, students will be able to apply translation theory into practical exercises at gradual levels of improvement: practice translating basic sentence patterns, translating clause types and translating short informative paragraphs such as newsletters, articles, etc. on many different topics including culture, entertainment, basic science, tourism, etc. In addition, students will be able to translate standard texts, improve their reading comprehension ability and develop grammar knowledge, vocabulary, and rhetorical measures.

Translation 2 Module is designed for third-year students. This course enables students to analyze, choose relevant translation methods, practice translating long texts of different types, discover and find ways to solve the difficulties that arise in the translation process. In addition, learners are provided with methods to exploit open-source resources and self-study methods to do group exercises and to translate for personal interests.

The module draws students closer to the real-world work environment in the future because this module gives learners access to documents of various functions that often appear in everyday life and academic life which require translation: advertising, regulations, product manuals, and professional articles.
