Overview

Advanced English 1 is designed for English majored students of Faculty of Foreign Languages, University of Technology and Education, who are in the first semester of their fourth year to achieve the Advanced level of English Proficiency or level C1 in the CEFR accordingly.  In particular, students will enhance their English macro skills such as Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing and test-taking skills and strategies through the lessons and practise IELTS test papers.  Simultaneously, the course also facilitates students to develop other skills namely learning autonomy and teamwork.

Expand their foundation knowledge through listening, reading, writing and speaking activities.

Expand their lexical range and familiar grammatical structures through listening, reading, writing and speaking activities

Expand their knowledge of listening, reading, writing and speaking strategies in IELTS question types

Manipulate skills in listening for main ideas, listening for gist and details in talks, monologues and conversation to pick out the correct answers (with more focus on parts 1 and 2 of the IELTS Listening Test)

Manipulate skills in reading for gist, reading for main ideas and details in academic passages to pick out the correct answers (with more focus on parts 1 and 2 of the IELTS Reading test)

Manipulate skills in writing to write effective and well-organized reports in IELTS Writing task 1 (line graphs – writing about trends; bar charts, pie charts and tables – describing and comparing data)  and cause-effect and opinion and discussion essays in IELTS Writing task 2

Manipulate skills in speaking to introduce themselves and talk about familiar topics in IELTS Speaking Test Part 1, answer  individual long turn  questions from a given cue card  in Part 2, and discuss more complicated questions in Part 3

Self-study to equip themselves with linguistics knowledge and skills as well as techniques in doing International Standardized tests.
