This course is designed for HCMUTE English majored students at upper-intermediate level to achieve low-advanced level (equivalent to B2 –CEFR) in listening and speaking. It really reflects a thoroughly integrated academic listening and speaking spectrum. The purposeful integration of critical thinking and an enhanced focus on academic skills such as making inferences, analysing, synthesizing, problem-solving, note-taking and test-taking helps students develop strategies for success in the classroom and on standardized tests. Overview

This course is designed to help English majors at HCMUTE progress their listening and speaking skill to the upper-intermediate level (equivalent to B1+ - CEFR). It provides students with opportunities to enhance their academic oral communication skills, such as listening and responding to the authentic broadcasts, short lectures, and long conversations, and taking good notes.  They then discuss or debate the issues mentioned in the listening tasks. Besides, an introduction to public speaking is included, with a focus on speaking to inform, which helps develop students’ confidence in delivering effective informative speech.

Translation Theories provide students with basic principles in the field of translation types of translation-interpreting, methods and techniques of translation, the difference between translations English-Vietnamese and Vietnamese-English. In addition, the module also provides learners with an overview of the general concepts and information on translation history, translation and interpreting, and practical exercises. By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to apply translation theories into practice translation and interpretation and promote their passion for translating.

Overview

This course enables learners to review basic knowledge about different techniques in translating and compiling as well as avoiding mistakes while translating. Students are required to practice translating texts from English into Vietnamese and vice versa at an advanced level: practice translating texts in different fields including economics, politics, culture, technology (IT, Environmental Technology, Engineering, Electrical - Electronics). This course also helps students to improve their English reading comprehension skills, apply grammatical range, enrich lexical resources, vary rhetorical methods, as well as apply knowledge of Vietnamese and British-American culture in translating. At the end of the course, students understand the fundamentals of translating English-Vietnamese and Vietnamese-English.
