Overview
This course is designed to provide the students of English major at UTE with the large-scale view of the main features of the area of language study concerned: its scope and principles of enquiry, its basic concerns and key concepts involved in studying and analyzing pragmatic meaning. The course helps the students explore the relationship between semantics and pragmatics, the two branches of linguistics that look at the meaning. The course also covers the area of language function that embraces the use of language in social contexts (knowing what to say, how to say it, and when to say it - and how to "be" with other people).
