Overview

The module provides learners with the basic knowledge of English phonetics and phonology and the International Phonetic Alphabet system (IPA). It helps students to distinguish between spelling, phonics and phonetics in British and American English. At the same time, the module provides learners with knowledge in word stress, sentence stress and intonation. At the end of the course, learners are able to pronounce sounds, words, sentences and short conversation patterns correctly as well as use the English intonation properly.

Acquire theoretical knowledge about the phonetic and acoustic systems of English and the IPA International Phonetic System

Recognize common problems in learners’ pronunciation

Describe sounds, roles and rules of phonemes in language; describe the distribution of phonemes in the syllabic structure; describe types of phonetics in English such as vowels, consonants; describe phonological features in English including stress and intonation

Analyse syllabic structure, phonetic phenomena in English and the function of stress and of intonation

Distinguish between spelling, phonetics and phoneme; between standard English and other regional dialects; between British English and American English

Address common pronunciation problems among learners, with emphasis on those faced by Vietnamese learners
