Abstract
Pre-service teachers, when entering a teacher education programme, usually hold existing beliefs about subject knowledge, teaching, learning, teachers, and learners. As these beliefs are normally naïve and unrealistic, changes in their initial beliefs have been one of critical aims of teacher education programmes. However, in ESP teacher education contexts, changes in pre-service teachers’ beliefs have been unexplored. In this seminar, pre-service teachers’ initial beliefs about ESP teaching and changes in these beliefs over the time of an ESP teaching methodology course and the practicum in an ESP teacher education programme will be outlined and discussed. The qualitative case study method will also be described in detail to provide an insight into how data for this study were gathered. Findings from this study can deepen understanding of pre-service ESP teachers’ belief changes and provide practical implications for ESP teacher education programmes.
