This course aims at equipping third-year students who major in Translation and Interpretation with background knowledge of British literature and culture. In terms of cultural aspects, the students will look at the overview of factors such as geography, history and politics that have had impacts the foundation of British culture. The analysis of these factors will help the students understand more deeply and be able to explain cultural phenomena in the countries which have been significantly influenced by British culture. Regarding British literature, the students will be provided with the introduction to acclaimed literary works and authors within the context of the work. Based on their knowledge of culture and literature, the students will practice translating extracts from the literary works in order to have a better understanding of literary language and be able to translate literary works.

The course is designed for English-majored students to obtain listening and speaking skills at intermediate level (B1+). To be more specific, students can achieve listening-speaking strategies (getting main ideas and details) and can comprehend common themes of work, school, entertainment, hobbies, experience description, dream, etc. and then discuss, give reasons as well as explain ideas about the given topics. Moreover, students can broaden their general knowledge and pool of vocabulary through units. Furthermore, academic skills, such as inferring, summarizing, giving presentation, group-work, test-taking are emphasized during in-class activities to develop learners’ critical thinking and study skills.

Translation Theories provide students with basic principles in the field of translation types of translation-interpreting, methods and techniques of translation, the difference between translations English-Vietnamese and Vietnamese-English. In addition, the module also provides learners with an overview of the general concepts and information on translation history, translation and interpreting, and practical exercises. By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to apply translation theories into practice translation and interpretation, and promote their passion for translating.

This course is designed to provide students with talks and lectures about academic and social and natural science topics, and opportunities to discuss/debate follow-up issues. Simultaneously, they can sharpen their critical thinking skills which help them to reason, analyze, synthesize, evaluate, debate, and solve problems. Besides, they have a chance to widen their knowledge of advanced vocabulary, pronunciation, and functional language, which can be used to enhance their English accuracy and fluency in group discussions, debates, informative presentations, proposal presentations, persuasive presentations, negotiations, and conflict management. The course also helps improve such important study skills as working in groups, note-taking, and comprehending long lectures, as well as test-taking skills. Moreover, students’ awareness of the significance of critical thinking skills is also developed during the course
