This is one of the courses which helps students to combine their knowledge of English with their technical knowledge and develop their four skills through varied activities. Authentic reading and listening passages from a wide variety of sources, and a large range of topics, e.g. basic electric electricity, electric circuits, electric motors, electronics in the home, data transmission, and many more will not only enlarge students’ knowledge of electrics and electronics but increase their technical terms as well. The emphasis of the course is on learning how to read technical texts dealing with electrical and electronic engineering and to read and describe diagrams, graphs, electrical and electronic values of components, etc. The course fosters students’ capability of independence in employing the available sources recommended to develop their technical English and working in technical English fields.

Overview

The course is to provide English major sophomores with comprehensive knowledge about information technology in terms of computer, operating system, hard ware, soft ware, data transmission, computer network, multi-media, network safety and data security. In addition, this course aims at enhancing students’ English communication ability in technical contexts and offering students opportunities to develop translation and interpretation skills which are of neccessity for their future career.

This course aims at equipping third-year students who major in Translation and Interpretation with background knowledge of American literature and culture. In terms of cultural aspects, the students will look at the overview of factors such as geography, history and politics that have had impacts the foundation of American culture. The analysis of these factors will help the students understand more deeply and be able to explain cultural phenomena in the countries which have been significantly influenced by American culture. Regarding American literature, the students will be provided with the introduction to acclaimed literary works and authors within the context of the work. Based on their knowledge of culture and literature, the students will practice translating extracts from the literary works in order to have a better understanding of literary language and be able to translate literary works.

This course is designed for English majored students to achieve high upper-intermediate level (equivalent to B2+ – CEFR) in writing. This course provides students with a practical and efficient approach to acquire critical writing skills. For students involved in the academic world, the ability to write critically is crucial as it enables students to raise their voice and shapes their critical thinking. This in turn has a profound effect on their ability to conduct secondary research and write academic papers, which is one of the most essential skills that university students need to develop. The course, therefore, aims to develop students’ language competences required at advanced level. Lastly, the course equips students with soft skills namely presentation skill, interpersonal skill, teamwork skill and ability to work independently.
