It really reflects a thoroughly integrated academic listening and speaking spectrum. The purposeful integration of critical thinking and an enhanced focus on academic skills such as making inferences, analysing, synthesizing, problem-solving, note-taking and test-taking helps students develop strategies for success in the classroom and on standardized tests. Besides, academic skills, i.e. inferencing, consolidation, note-taking and exam taking skills are also emphasized to help students succeed academically.

This course is intended for year-4 students of English major at UTE-HCMC. It is designed to assist students in developing public speaking skills.  Students are trained in selecting and organizing ideas; adapting a message to a particular audience; supporting ideas clearly, vividly, and logically; and delivering an effective message with self confidence and enthusiasm.

During the course, attention will be focused upon providing an atmosphere of positive reinforcement and constructive feedback. Students are encouraged to help each other with suggestions for improvement. The basic philosophy of this course is that public speaking involves skills which can be mastered by anyone with motivation and determination.

Specifically, the course helps students develop reading skills such as reading for main ideas, reading for detail information, distinguishing topic and key words, critical thinking skills, guessing meanings of words in context, and word analysis. In addition, to help students become familiar with the self-study and standardized PET exam format, this course provides important reading strategies and skills in preparation for this exam.
