My name is Vy Thi Hoang Anh, one of the HCMUTE’s FFL alumni, cohort 2006. Currently, I’m working as a Marketing Supervisor for Yara Vietnam Company Ltd., a Norway headquartered corporation leading Europe in the field of agriculture and fertilizers.
I would like to share with you the journey full of challenges I’ve been through as an English major who works in marketing. After graduation, I spent 2 years working for Sojitz Vietnam, a Japanese trading company. While working there, I realized a need to improve my business knowledge, especially in the field of marketing. As a result, I decided to apply for an MBA scholarship and successfully earned a fully-funded one at National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology in Taiwan. Realizing this was the right path for me, I concentrated on doing my master’s program in marketing, acquiring a great deal of knowledge related to strategic marketing management, international business and marketing research, to name just a few. Such knowledge is definitely essential for a person who works in an international corporation.
As an MBA holder, I returned to Vietnam and continued working in the marketing department for three companies specializing in agriculture and fertilizers, including Vietnam-Japan Fertilizer Company, Baconco Vietnam, and Yara Vietnam, my current employer. With the experience I have gained from the job in multinational corporations, I would like to share some of my thoughts and reflection, which might be helpful for those who want to pursue a business career, especially marketing.
- Remember: Fluent English is a big advantage.
- Apply for sales representative or sales administrator positions so that you have an opportunity to learn about business
- Improve your business knowledge by taking short courses or applying for an MBA program.
- Widen your knowledge and gain experience in the field that you are interested and work in the same field for different companies; doing so, you can build an impressive profile in the future.
To me, what we learn at school serves as the solid foundation for our job in a multi-cultural working environment, yet what creates our future career is the experience we gain and the efforts we make at work. So, be faithful to the journey you choose; it will pay off!
