On September 3, 2025, the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education, had the honor of welcoming Professor Michael Furmanovsky from Ryukoku University (Japan) to deliver a special lecture for students majoring in Translation & Interpretation and Business English.

The session centered on developing critical and logical thinking – essential skills that enable students to ask sharper questions not only in academic settings but also in everyday life. By learning how to frame thoughtful questions, students can cultivate a clear and structured mindset, synthesize information scientifically, and move away from emotional or hasty judgments.

As Professor Michael shared, this ability requires students to be proactive: evaluating situations, reflecting deeply, and connecting new insights with existing knowledge. A practical tip he emphasized was to begin every question with “I understand that…” / “I know that…” before leading into the main point. This simple habit helps learners affirm their foundation of knowledge while expanding the space for meaningful academic exchange.

The professor also highlighted that critical thinking is the key to thriving in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI). With information more accessible than ever, what truly distinguishes learners is their ability to analyze, think logically, and chart new directions for lifelong learning.
At the same time, Professor Michael encouraged students to build the habit of upgrading themselves daily by reading credible global data sources such as Visual Capitalist, etc., as well as exploring scientific books, journals, and up-to-date reports.

The lively atmosphere was marked by students’ enthusiasm and curiosity. Many posed thought-provoking questions that even challenged the professor himself, yet through careful reasoning and synthesizing prior knowledge, they were able to present insightful and accurate responses.
As the Coordinator of the “Teachers Supporting Teachers Co-country” project, Professor Michael has been devoted to voluntary teaching in Vietnam since 2007. We are deeply grateful that he chose Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education as his destination in the 18th year of this meaningful journey.
