Building on previous successes, FFL Labour Union (FFL LU), with the love and support from the Dean’s Board and all other FFL members, has managed to meet the academic year 2020-2021 objectives and operational goals, overcoming both objective and subjective obstacles and difficulties.
FFL LU has faced numerous difficulties and challenges over the past school year. Indeed, in the middle of the global COVID-19 pandemic, HCM City has been afflicted by complicated and unpredictable disease outbreaks, which have had serious implications and hampered the operations of the HCMC UTE University Labour Union in general and the FFL LU in particular. In addition, the majority of FFL LU Committee members are young women who must juggle teaching, professional development, and caring for their families with small children, making it more difficult for them to dedicate time and attention to the union’s tasks.
FFL LU, on the other hand, has performed brilliantly as a result of all members' enthusiastic participation in the union's activities, as well as their efforts to overcome problems and constantly innovate.
Firstly, since the FFL staff is predominantly female, congratulatory festivities for women on Vietnamese Women's Day (October 20, 2020) and International Women's Day (March 8, 2021) were always well-attended and organized in a happy and welcoming atmosphere.
Next, FFL LU successfully organized a small celebration to commemorate Teacher's Day on November 20th, 2020, in collaboration with the FFL Alumni Association, and presented mementos to two retiring lecturers: Dr. Nguyen Dinh Thu (former Dean of FFL) and Mr. Tran Hung Viet.
After repeated postponements of Summer holiday plans owing to outbreaks of the COVID-19 disease, FFL LU was able to successfully organize a Spring trip in Da Lat City (Lam Dong) in early January 2021. The excursion brought together a large number of FFL members, as well as their families and relatives, enhancing solidarity and cohesion among members of the big family—the Faculty of Foreign Languages.
Then, on the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2021, FFL Union called for donations in kind and cash to support the Thien An and Mai Tam shelters in Thu Duc City. However, due to the complex situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, visits to those organizations for direct gift-giving were not possible as in previous years.
Furthermore, despite the many challenges posed by the pandemic and a heavy workload, FFL LU's "homegrown athletes" enthusiastically participated in the UTE LU annual sports competitions and gained numerous impressive sporting achievements, including one gold and two silver medals in women's shuttle-cock kicking, a silver medal in relay, a consolation prize in women’s soccer and a consolation prize in running marathon." Also, FFL members won a consolation prize in the UTE Union's music video contest "Tự Hào UTE" with the MV titled "Ơi Cuộc Sống Mến Thương!"
Aside from movement-related activities and a focus on members' lives, the FFL LU has collaborated with organisations both inside and outside the Faculty to organise activities which are aimed at improving the professionalism and expertise of faculty members in particular and university members in general. In January 2021, a seminar on Scientific Research was held, followed by a sharing session on "Improving your TOEIC score" in March 2021.
The new school year 2021-2022 is just around the corner, and in the midst of many difficulties and challenges, the FFL LU Committee will continue to promote the accomplishments that have been made, deserving the trust and support of all Faculty members, and contributing to the continued growth of FFL LU.
