Teachers, particularly language teachers, in most institutions and schools are expected not only to maintain but also to enhance their professional teaching competence. For this to occur, they need to be provided with opportunities for critically reflecting on their teaching practice to improve their teaching performance. Among different methods, peer mentoring has been identified to provide a promising avenue for this purpose in the context of pre-service teacher education and in-service teacher professional development. 

This seminar features empirical research on the impacts of different peer mentoring models which were integrated into teacher education and teacher professional development in Vietnam and Australia. Studies examining the impacts of these peer-based models are discussed, along with implications for practice and research. Findings of these studies help identify several critical issues that teacher educators should take into consideration when planning and implementing a peer mentoring program for both pre-service and in-service teachers. 

Guest Speaker: Hoa Nguyen, PhD
Dr. Hoa Nguyen is a lecturer in Teacher Professional Learning and TESOL in the School of Education, University of New South Wales.  She has experience teaching and training pre-service and in-service teachers in Asia and Australia. Being active in research allows her to incorporate her research interests into teaching to create an intellectually engaging and challenging learning environment. She enjoys working with teachers, in their role as mentors to student teachers and early career teachers. She has a strong commitment and passion to develop teachers’ professional learning. Her ongoing research interests have been in the areas of teacher education, teacher professional development, mentoring, TESOL, and sociocultural theory. Her research will be published in a forthcoming book by Springer entitled Models of Mentoring in Language Education.
